Gift Set-Iwm Sherman Tank NEW

Sad bit of poorly engineered Erector type clone
As a collector of all types of nut & bolt metal sets I was happy to pick one of these up cheaply, as I'd not tried any of IWM's sets before. They are pretty standard 10mm spaced sets, (like Merkur, Eitech, and Polylong/Chinese clones), and use the Chinese M4 with phillipshead bolts and hex nuts like most all the sets out of China except the MicroSteelWorld sets. The metal parts are finished fairly well, standard powdercoating, but the nuts and bolts really are pretty bad; ie poorly threading, many jam one direction, and the very tiny screwdriver isn't even up to really much use at all. The 2 things about this set that makes it so much worse than the others of close ilk is that the plastic parts are really atrocious, and the engineering is even worse. To make the model as planned (and the plans are very sketchy too, not up to normal clarity for this type of beginner set), there was no planning or parts (would need much more nuts and longer screws for one) to have moving parts secured at all. Either you just make it static, or if you wanted the treads/turret/etc to move, you must just leave the bolt/nut loose, not even room for locknutting even if you supply the extra nuts (which I had plenty of in my own spares). The barrel's attachment was a total disaster without the use of parts from other sets (I used Meccano) as it just was stuffed into a hole and hung there like a limp whatever. I've put Erector, Meccano and about 50 other different systems models together since I was about 6, about 60 years, and this was one of the few that I just put back in the box, in disgust of the poor shoddy planning that went into the kit. This is only worthwhile if you need the olivedrab parts, and want to do a complete remake/redesign in 10mm pattern. Frankly I'm glad that I got it very cheap (about 25% of normal asking prices for IWM models) and it's the only one that I'll need for my collection. My personal feeling is that it's not worth the time, effort or frustration, and CERTAINLY not worth the standard prices that IWM gets for their sadly under-engineered and poorly designed kits. Not a bad box though, LOL!
