Hits or misses - it's a definite collective hit!
This cd collection illustrates both the variety of sounds and of fortunes - while exemplifying the era. There really are no 'bad' tracks, and for anyone who just remembers liking a couple of these tunes - you'd be bound to realize ...you still love 'em! The Rolling Stones connection is strong, as this was their manager's lable and some of these tracka are Jagger/Richard penned. Great album for the car, superior I think, to almost every comp I've seen - except maybe if I'd done one for myself! I highly recommend, this has everything a 1960's Pandora's Box could offer.

Laura Veirs 'Troubled By Fire'
After hearing one song on the radio, from her latest cd, I took a punt on this cd first. LOTS to like here, with some slightly playful tunes, and pleasantly delivered vocal work. Perhaps a little lightweight here, she might do well to follow Beck's (and Bob Dylan's) example with some more poignant and atmospheric songs - she seems like she can take the vocal challenges but needs to stand out above the crowd somehow. She's certainly showing signs of being someone to take seriously, and take notice of. This cd is consistent, and certainly worth keeping in my opinion - and though this effort lacks a bit of weight, it works as an album. Also recommended for good coffee-shop or Sunday morning listening! I look forward to hearing more, and certainly if she'll stretch out a bit and challenge the ear a little more.

Laura Veirs 'Year Of Meteors'
Another worthy effort from Ms Veirs, and if you are thinking to hear her music then I can recommend this as one to look into. Strong and determined tracks maintain her already-strong momentum - and bode extremely well for her next album. There's no low spot here, she is nothing but consistent in everything I've heard from her so far. There is one critique I can level at this CD though, and it is more to do with the VERY upfront production by Tucker Martine. It's evident that he's a band member, as throughout the playing I'm conscious of a band with a female singer - rather than a female singer with a band. Yes she's to the fore, but less augmented by the band and more surrounded by it. For me, this lass ought to have taken a leaf from Bonnie Raitt or Sheryl Crow and be the main event. A little investigation finds that Tucker is the drummer..... evoking a wry smile from those who'd expect drummers to be heavier-handed - but to his credit the arrangements are top quality, he just needs to back the intensity of the instrumentation off a tad. In the benefit of hindsight, variety is the spice of life and this release still holds up well as her 'band' album now! There are times in recording, when the singer needs a little more space, and give the the listener time to luxuriate on them. This artist especially, should be afforded that, in my opinion. Overall, I am encouraged by this album, and salivate over the prospect of getting her newest work; 'Saltbreakers'. Bob Harris is playing her, and hopefully Britain will hear and see more of her in the near future. One to watch out for, and I recommend you do! Mark (landmarkdisc)
