The Hornblower Companion by C.S. Forester
Book: The Hornblower Companion by C.S. Forester Review by Daniel Hedges This is a fabulous book ! Anyone who is a Horatio Hornblower fan would be crazy not to have this book. I cannot overstate how much fun it is to reference this book while reading the Hornblower series. Even if you have already read the series, this book will be like having a scrap book of your memories. Forester wrote this book with chapters referencing each one of his Hornblower novels. The chapters show the geography and battle plans of the area and action described in the books. While Hornblower was a fictitious character, the areas and the basic events reference real historical events. The book has many sketches of various ships and the drawings are beautifuly created. As you read your next Hornblower book, you will find yourself keeping a copy of the “Hornblower Companion” right next to you. There is nothing like maps and drawings to help you visualize what is taking place in the novels. This book by Forester is one of the best planned and laid-out books I’ve ever seen! Hornblower's Ships by Martin Saville
Book: Hornblower's Ships by Martin Saville Review by Daniel Hedges This is a beautiful book about an often over-looked subject. The photos are great!!! This book describes the building of the very large scale ship models that were used for the Horatio Hornblower TV series. These models were the size of SUVs. I’m a model builder myself and I used to have an architectural model building business, so it makes it even easier for me to appreciate the work that was done on these models. Anyone who is a model builder or a fan of ships will love this book. Any fans of the Hornblower books or shows will also love this book. The color photographs of the models are so realistic, that you feel like you have gone back in time and taken photos of an actual sea battle! My only wish was that the book had even more color photos. But, this would have increased the cost of the book dramatically. This book would also make a good gift for any Hornblower fan.
