The Juliet Letters
This is almost scary in it's aggressive honesty. Any one who's been through a divorce will feel stabbed by lines from it. Elvis Costello has defied the limitations of genre all the way through his rather odd career. There's no concealment of writing honours here and it is challenging to sit, listen and decide who wrote what bit, what tune. It is not easy to get it right - the Brodskys are as capable of writing as is Costello. In the notes, EC points out that, in the classical world, song-cyles for voice and String Quartet are extremely uncommon - I can't think of any nor have reviewers elsewhere mentioned any. Is it a recent form of Classical music and if so, do we actually owe it to George Martin & the Beatles' "She's Leaving Home" and "Eleanor Rigby"? I'vr read reviews in 'another place' where some of these pieces have been called 'weak' but I find no holes after listening for (wow!) 13 years. I settle down for an hour's listening and 15 minutes later it's finished. Any CD that can destroy subjective time like that is something to cherish

Who's Next CD Remastered vs vinyl original
Is it just me or is the remastering actually a ruination exercise? Basba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled again just seem a little slower than the originals, the punch & excitement just isn't there. It's sad to say that the versions played on CSI sound better over a cheap stereo TV than this does over my HiFi system.

TRAWLER Oysterband
Powerful! Some of this collection are re-recordings to include the influence of new band members and the sound is hardened and tightened-up. The early Hal-an-Tow is a slap in the face to those with preformed expectations of folk-rock: the new version here is a kick in the balls! There isn't a duff track on the whole collection. The greatest empirically based recommendation I can give this CD is that, in my 50 years of music buying, I've had quite a few LPs nicked but only one CD: this one and it's been nicked TWICE! Even more telling, each time a copy 'got lost' I was working in a team where I was the oldest by a factor of 2 with some of the 'kids' not twenty yet but this CD was good enough to drive them to theft!!
