This book on space stations is a result of aseries of lectures held over the past sev eral years at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. After the first NASAIESA Spa celab mission SLI in 1983 and the first German DI Spacelab mission in 1985, the interest in human spaceflight of both the scientific community and the public at large reached another peak in the post-Apollo era. Participation in an international space station project became a possible prospect of European space policy. A com plementary step logical in this development was to offer seminars and lectures on the subject of space stations and spaceflight application at universities, as weIl. In the 1987/88 winter term, we (E. Messerschmid and F. Pohlemann who was fol lowed by R. Bertrand in 1992) offered a lecture series on "Space Stations" for the first time. Since the 1990/91 winter term, this lecture series has not only been held at the University of Stuttgart, but has also been delivered in English at the Ecole Na tionale Superieure de L'Aeronautique et deI'Espace (ENSAE) in Toulouse, France, and in 1995/96 at the International Space University (lSU) in Strasbourg, France as part of the newly introduced course for the Master of Space Studies (MSS) degree. To complement these lectures, the Space Systems Institute (lRS) of the Univer sity of Stuttgart offers students at the universities mentioned above aSpace Station Design Workshop (SSDW) covering various aspects of a space station.
