It is estimated that we have up to 50,000 thoughts a day and 70-80% of them are negative, what is a kid to do, what is anybody to do? The Secret Formula teaches socio-emotional skills using mindfulness activities that increase self-awareness that we can use throughout our entire lives. This awareness enables us to fill our minds with positive thoughts and our lives with positive actions, ultimately enhancing positive relationships. Research has demonstrated a link between social-emotional competence and cognitive development, language skills, mental health and school success. This book is based on the whole book approach. It is meant to be read with someone, not to someone. Set aside some time to read it leisurely in your classroom. You could read this entire book (24 pages) within an hour if you only focus on the reflections, but it is highly recommended that you follow through with the mind/body/spirit activities throughout the book. The book is separated into 12 different sessions of activities that I have used throughout the years counseling students. They are among my favorites and these insights can help you to learn more about your student and strengthen your connection with them. The Secret Formula allows us to learn how to recognize our thoughts using the THINK method, how to communicate our thoughts and feelings and what to do when we are feeling blue. Students will also discover who makes up their inner support circle and to discover their strengths at www.thrively.com. Research by the Search Institute found that kids who thrive have two important supports: knowledge of what their Sparks are, and adults who support the development of those Sparks. A caring and involved adult who recognizes a Spark and who is willing to cultivate that Spark can help a young person thrive. As a counselor, I visit the classroom and read a section of the book to the class and follow through with the activity. Students will learn about their Feelings and Emotions, Breathing Meditations, Goal Setting and more. It has been a great experience for me and kids enjoyed the lessons. The Secret Formula curriculum is being piloted in classrooms in both the USA & UK.
