1. This will be the first published monograph on Thomas Wijck, who was a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade and a peer of Cornelis Bega, as well as a leader within the Haarlem artistic community. This work will recover Wijck's importance to Dutch painting. 2. This will be the first monograph to seriously treat the subject of alchemy in seventeenth-century painting-not as a merely satirical subject, or as "documentary" evidence of laboratory practices, but as the central factor in an artist's development of a marketable persona that traded in illusion and virtuosity. Several sections-particularly chapter five-will focus on artist's materials, recipes, and the generation of chemical knowledge within the studio. 3. This monograph will closely examine a number of pictures by Thomas Wijck that have been held in private collections for the past century, and have not been published upon previously in any detail. This includes works in the collection of the Chemical Heritage Foundation.
