It provides specific solutions integrated into an inspiring vision for a new British constitution.This book reviews some of the seminal ideas of mid seventeenth century constitutionalists to achieve universal suffrage and secure a state of freedom and happiness.The Majority Principle is not working - The author shows that after some 350 years, under the operation of the majority principle, Britain has failed to establish a supreme Parliament of faithful representatives who reflect the consent and the free will of the people. Parliament remains subservient to the Prime Minister and government of the day made up of individuals who are members of a single tiny political party. Any representation in Parliament is exclusively that of political parties. The free expression of the people, as reflected in their preferences, is effectively ignored. Party whips enforce cross-assembly voting so that governing political parties, with the support of less than 20 per cent of the electorate, can enforce their own legislative preferences on the majority of the electorate.There are many constitutional constraints - The Briton's Quest for Freedom analyses in some detail how this state of affairs arises as a result of political party motivations and gaps in constitutional provisions. Some 50 significant constitutional constraints on individual freedom are identified including abuses in the areas of non-criminal law usually arising through a failure to apply juries. These failures deny the people of Britain a more open and direct freedom of expression. This has contributed to a significant weakening of the unity of the Kingdom. This heralds a diminishment in international power which only serves the direct interests of foreign states by enhancing their relative status to that of Britain.A supreme Parliament reflecting the free will of the people - Unlike many books on constitution The Briton's Quest for Freedom identifies the missing constitutional elements, laws and principles. Their positive contribution is demonstrated by applying them to the electoral and legislative cycle to establish a supreme Parliament, reflecting the free will of the people. Proposals for a new basis for operation of Parliament and Government are described along with a new role for an independent House of Lords. These constitutional proposals create a situation which is more responsive to electorate preferences. The result is a flexible and adaptive governance addressing the aspirations of national electorate preferences currently frustrated by devolved assemblies.The Minority Principle - The minority principle is a significant and original constitutional principle introduced by this book which is designed to eliminate the serious drawbacks associated with the majority principle. Ordered two books as a presents one had a faded cover and a persons name in it in ink and the other had 8 black pages.
I informed the seller with photos and got half the money back.
Needless to say the quality of checking is not brillant - Lets hope it improves :-)
