Quick-time events involving buttons on the controller or its joysticks dictate the outcome of events that occur in the game. NPCs can have their minds read by Lucas, with a short joystick quick-time event governing whether he is successful. After reading a character's mind, players will glean additional insight into which dialogue tree to pursue. Choices made within the game on how to progress the story will have a significant impact on what happens in Lucas' story and how the game eventually ends. A sanity bar is prominently shown, and each action can take the playable character closer to normal or deeper into a slowly dissolving world of madness.
