Title: Book brings WIU history to life Author: Nathan Woodside Publisher: McDonough County This Week Date: 4/6/09 A new book is shedding light on a history of WIU that has rarely been seen before. "The Campus History Series: Western Illinois University," is a collection of more than 200 images and informative descriptions within 126 pages, beginning with the construction of Sherman Hall in 1900 and ending with present day student life. The book is coauthored WIU Professor and Director of Archives Jeff Hancks and history graduate student Adam Carey. "I think people that have been in the community awhile and have seen the growth of the campus will find this book interesting," Hancks said. "In looking at the aerial photos they'll recognize how the footprint of the university has changed over the years." Hancks said all of the book's content was derived from the WIU Archives and the Digital Media Production Department. Most of the photos, according to Hancks, are very rare and have rarely been seen by the public. The book also records the last decade of WIU's history, something that has not yet been done. In 1999 local author and historian John Hallwas published, "First Century: A Pictoral History of Western Illinois University." The book chronicled the history of WIU with in-depth photos and narrative. Hancks and Carey's book leaves off where Hallwas's timeline ends, relying more heavily on capturing history through images. According to Hancks, the book also includes the extreme growth WIU experienced in the 1960s. "I knew that the campus grew a lot in the 1960s when the baby-boomer kids were arriving at college but I had no idea about the explosive growth the campus experienced," he said. "We were opening up buildings every year and the number of students were increasing by one and two thousand a year. They had to find rooms and classrooms for these students very quickly." Pubished by Arcadia Publishing, "The Campus History Series: Western Illinois University," can be found at New Copperfield's Book Service on the north side of the Macomb square, at the WIU book store or directly from the WIU Archives department.
