Excerpt from In the Heel of Italy: A Study of an Unknown City My interest in the unknown district with which this book deals dates from a commission from the Editor of The Architectural Review three years ago to explore the city of Lecce and to describe and illustrate its buildings. By his courtesy I am able to reproduce in this book eight of the drawings which have appeared in that magazine. In preparing the short series thus contributed, I found so much untouched and valuable material awaiting to be collected and recorded, that I commenced the present work, which is an attempt (the first ever made in any language) to outline the story of the city's history, to describe its inhabitants, their interesting province, and their remarkable achievements in art.
