Product Information
River City Soccer Hooligans is an arcade-style sports game starring the schoolyard heroes of River City Ransom. Players take control of team captain Kunio (also known as Alex, Mr. K, Sam, and by other names in the North American editions of previous games), to set formations and lead the action. On the pitch, characters can perform basic soccer moves such as dribbling, passing, and tackling to steal the ball. Games are played in varying weather conditions, such as strong wind and rain, across fields of dirt that turns to mud, or lush grass that can fill with puddles. Kunio and his squad compete against national teams from around the world.<br><br>When conditions are right, skilled players can make use of special moves such as the "Drill Attack," "Tornado Kick," "Explosive Attack," and "Super Head Shot." As they win matches under different difficulty settings, gamers can unlock as many as 50 additional teams for play. They can also earn equipment items that give skill boosts to the characters of their choice. A wireless multiplayer mode is available, for up to four DS players in 2-vs-2 action, or in "point kick" competition against computer-controlled opponents.<br><br>Part of the copious and long running Kunio Kun series in Japan, the game's North American release is preceded by well-known arcade-era localizations such as' Renegade and Super Dodge Ball, as well as River City Ransom. While the characters and settings featured in international versions of these River City games vary greatly, themes of toughness and team spirit carry throughout the series. River City Soccer Hooligans' most direct predecessor may be Technos' Nintendo World Cup for NES, which held competition between national teams in the U.S. edition, but featured Kunio's gang competing in a high school tournament in the original Japanese version.
