The Canon EF 8-15mm f/4 L USM Ultrasonic is an autofocus zoom fisheye lens. The lens itself weighs 540 grams and is 46 grams more with the plastic hood and front cap. Shooting ergonomics with this lens is superb. The zoom and focus controls are moderately dampened and easy to grab. Manual focusing is fast and easy while the autofocus is fast, quiet, and exact with a closest focusing distance of 0.16m. It also features an Ultra-low Dispersion glass for the suppression of chromatic aberration and a Sub-wavelength structure coating for reduced ghosting since fisheye lenses are prone of producing flares. The lens itself is designed and constructed to par with the standards of Canon’s pride, the L series type of lenses. The body of the lens is metal with smooth operating control rings. The linear focus extension system causes the lens to extend or retract a little bit during zooming. The front elements are slightly protruding which prohibits the use of front filters but is still possible via a holder at the rear which accepts up to 3 pre-cut gel filters. This unique item from Canon’s series of lenses offers a combination of circular and full-frame fish eye in a singular lens, with an angle of view of 180-175 degrees 30 feet for full frame sensor cameras. The diagonal angle of view is still similar through most of the length of the focal range. A round image in the middle of a black frame is achieved for all Canon EOS full-frame and 35mm cameras at 8mm while at 15mm, a distorted 180 degree corner to corner image completely occupies the rectangular frame. At 15mm and an infinity focus distance, only a little portion of the corners in the frame is cropped to make the circular image. The aspherical lens has an aperture range of f/4 to f/22. The Canon EF 8-15mm f/4 L USM fisheye lens is designed for use on 35mm and full frame cameras; however, it can also be used on all Canon cameras from the 1.3x and 1.6x range. The lens provides a partial circular fisheye result when the lens is mounted on APS-C and APS-H format camera bodies. Canon put “H” and “C” markings on the side of the lens to provide information to camera owners with the APS-C and APS-H models about the limitations of the lens’ focal length. APS-C users can also utilize the limiter switch to avoid zooming in to corner-darkening focal lengths. The zoom limiter switch stops the lens from zooming any wider than 10mm. Users would have to set the lens longer than 10mm to engage the switch. A petal-shaped bayonet mount hood is also included. The protective fluorine coating of the 8-15mm fisheye zoom lens effectively repels fingerprints, soiling, and smearing. The Canon EF fisheye zoom lens 8-15mm f/4 L USM Ultrasonic is a super sharp lens that puts the ease of shooting either a circular or frame-filling photo in just a flick of the zoom ring for full frame cameras. The lens adds convenience to photography by being two lenses in one with an instant manual focus override. It also serves as one good 180 degree frame-filling fisheye for any of Canon’s various sensor-size cameras.
