Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star unfolds on a massive scale. While other RPG games are confined to one planet, this PS3 title takes place in many outer space settings. Instead of just having to save the world, you'll travel across the cosmos and save multiple galaxies. In this PlayStation 3 adventure, you'll play as multiple characters. You can swap between each set of characters at any given time. To fully complete the story in Ar Nosurge, the average gamer will have to devote around 40 hours. Though the game is a sequel to Ciel Nosurge, you don't need to play the original to understand this story. This title also serves as a prequel to the Ar Tonelico series. The game was developed by Gust and published by Tecmo Koei. It was released in 2014 in the United States.The action is equally split between exploring and battling. In the exploration phase, players will search for items and advance the story. Not only can you talk to any NPC, but you can also speak to your party. Frequently talking to your party will shed new light on their motivations and give depth to their personalities. As you explore, enemies will randomly attack you at any given point. However, this game lets you see when a battle is coming so you can adequately prepare. A bar on the screen will shift colors as enemies approach and start flashing when they are nearby. When the bar is red and rapidly flashing, a battle begins. The battle system uses a turn-based combat mode similar to past games in this series. You'll select whether you want to attack, defend, or use magic. After making your choices, you'll watch the action play out. Battles in Ar Nosurge rely more on strategy than fast reflexes. Characters who have a strong repertoire of skills can be called into combat, damaging your enemies or healing your party. Every battle has a time limit in this game, with the fight ending when the time is reached. The winner is based on who did the most damage before the fight ended.To gain the most powerful weapons and items in Ar Nosurge, players will have to use Synthesis. This ancient crafting technique lets players combine multiple items into one powerful weapon or item. This crafting system allows you to create some truly unique items. The player also has the option of increasing the strength of their favorite weapon. Periodically, a player will learn new recipes by speaking to NPCs found in the shops.After a battle is over, you'll earn Dive points. These points are used to go inside the psyche of your allies. By helping them deal with trauma, you can alter their personality and increase their power. You can also enter the mind of other NPCs you meet as well. Through this process, you can turn a surly rival into a friendly foe. For these gameplay sections, the game uses a visual novel style similar to Ciel Nosurge on the PlayStation Vita. This Koei title earned a rating of T for teen from the ESRB.
