Enter the fantastic world of Mickey Mouse in Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion for the Nintendo 3DS. Developed by DreamRift and published by Disney Interactive Studios, this engaging adventure video game for players of all ages follows Mickey in his quest against the evil witch Mizrabel in the eponymous Castle of Illusion. The story is an all-new addition to the popular Wasteland saga, drawing on the Sega Genesis game Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. It is a sequel to the game Epic Mickey, which was developed by Junction Point Studios for the Nintendo Wii (and can also be played on the Wii U). Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion for the handheld Nintendo 3DS has the same 2D side-scrolling platform style as its predecessor for the Wii, but with pared down mechanics to streamline gameplay for the medium. Cast as Mickey Mouse, players interact with the unique touchscreen functionality of the Nintendo 3DS to paint and draw objects on the fly, seeing them magically transform into Disney-style illustrations in-game. Once created, items are then moved from the lower to the upper of the 3DS’ dual screens, where they transform into 3D renditions that make the most of the sophisticated visual technology of this handheld gaming system. Use Mickey’s magic brush to paint in this way to progress through the games and, ultimately, to confront Mizrabel herself and save Minnie and the Toons. Paint exactly what Mickey needs for any given situation, and develop coordination skills at the same time. Get the shapes a little off and an otherwise useful cannon could become a malfunctioning danger to Mickey. Also make use of Mickey’s magic paint and thinner to fire at enemies directly. With a retro visual appeal, recalling classic side-scrolling platformers of the 1990s, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion is a nostalgic treat for Disney fans. The game brings a wide range of Disney movie environments to life in immersive 3D, including the London skies and Neverland jungle of Peter Pan, Agrabah and the Cave of Wonders from Aladdin, the Little Mermaid’s Under the Sea environment, and many more Disney character-specific rooms within a large fortress in the later stages of the game. The classic visual appeal of the game also features plenty of upgraded elements, including Mickey animations, while enhanced movements, including higher jumping and speedier walking, keep the gameplay fresh and original. Fans will appreciate subtle nods to earlier games, like the original Castle of Illusion game on the Sega Genesis, including sound effects and poses. Controls are intuitive and easy to grasp, even for newcomers to handheld gaming. Players can jump once and press the same button again while in mid-air to have Mickey perform a vertical attack on enemies below. Swinging ropes and chains, meanwhile, can be grabbed onto by jumping toward them. Between their adventures and puzzles in pursuit of Mizrabel, players develop their own fortress, expanding a small fort into a large castle by populating it with each of the characters rescued from the evil Mizrabel.
