Jazz singer par excellence, Annie Ross, is one of the UK’s greatest jazz exports to the USA. Born in 1930, at the age of three she went to live with her aunt in the States, but returned to Britain in 1947, by which time she had already appeared in films and sung with American bands. She sang for a while at London’s Orchid Room but then decamped to France where she became very popular. A return to London saw her join Jack Parnell’s band for a while, and then in October 1954, Tony Crombie’s. Appearing in the review ‘Cranks’ was a great success for her, but when the show moved to New York and folded after just three weeks, Annie elected to stay and soon became one third of famed vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. She returned to Britain in 1962 and from then on could be found performing on a regular basis on either side of the Atlantic. You and Me Baby – An Evening with Annie Ross is a studio recreation of her Hampstead Theatre Club cabaret show, and features, among others, Rick Laird (bass) and Dave MacRae (keyboards). Here Annie and her band tackle a range of material, from Latin American – Wave, The Gentle Rain and Crickets Sing for Anamaria (Os Grilos) - to modern pop - Stone Soul Picnic, Cat Food and Country Pie. It all sounds great, as you’d expect from a singer and musicians of this calibre, and Vocalion are pleased to make this superb album available once again.
